MONTHLY NEWSLETTER
VOLUME 1: NO. 10, SEPTEMBER 2002

PROGRAM OF THE MONTH
One of PIE's newest members is Joyce Lee Mui Kwang of Canberra Secondary
School of Singapore. Joyce and her students have created a wonderful
communications project, web radio broadcasts and an e-newspaper. To best
understand the program, allow me to share Joyce's description of her efforts.

"Hello, I am a teacher from Canberra Secondary School, Singapore. We would
like to invite schools from around the world to participate in our project. I
am looking forward to your participation on our project. Here are the details:
E-bulletin URL: http://www.canberrasec.net/canberra/bulletin.html"
"We have been running an online newspaper and live broadcast radio station
in our school. We would like to now extend this to the global community. We
hope to feature:
1) News stories written by students from schools across the globe.
2) Audio/video interviews.
3) Stories could be local or worldwide, community or even school based.
4) Students interviewing each other through email, recording video/audio
and sending them to us."
"The project aims at producing an e-newspaper written by students around
the world as well as an Internet broadcast radio station produced, recorded
and presented by students. We have students already trained to produce these
programs so we need schools/students who can add to our content."
"Main tools needed: video, audio recording, and, email
Project Date: Aug 2002 to Oct 2002"
"Please email me if you are interested to join or have questions:
joycelm.css@canberrasec.org"

Students at Perth Amboy Tech High School in New Jersey, USA were invited by
Joyce to join the Canberra Secondary School students in working on the
project. The students at both schools have already begun sharing information.
The "ice-breaker," created by Joyce's students was a sharing of TOP TEN poll
results concerning the favorite foods and movies of the students at the two
schools. Please take a few minutes and look at this great student centered
communications program created by Joyce and her students at Canberra
Secondary School in Singapore. My students at Perth Amboy Tech are very
excited about working with students in another country. Given the
opportunity, I am positive that your students which be just as excited.

PIE "TIP OF THE MONTH"
Interested in the weather? Everyone is. Trying to find something to talk
about? Looking for a point of interest to share with students working in
email exchanges? Simply go to www.weather.com/travel and gain access to more
current weather information than one can imagine. There are numerous features
that permit the user to access current date, much of it illustrated by
satellite maps. Other benefits include a detailed section entitled, "How
Weather Affects Your Life." Great information is available to enhance student
learning and interest in various subject areas. A word of caution when
students use the website. Advertising is included on each page that you, as
the teacher, may wish to monitor and restrict. Otherwise, this is a great
site.

DIRECTOR'S NOTES
Project Idea Exchange has expanded again. I am pleased to announce that
the Environmental Council of Washington, DC, USA has created a link from
their website (www.enviroliteracy.org) to the PIE website. To reach the PIE
link, scroll down the Environmental Council home page to "For Teachers"
(click on), then scroll down on the next page to "Connecting Classrooms"
(click on) and your will find five website currently listed. Since this
partner occurred a few days ago, I have not yet had the opportunity to fully
explore the Environmental Council website, but what I have seen so far
appears to be extremely beneficial. In a future newsletter, I will share with
you more information about the Environmental Council website.
Are you involved in an educational project that is successful? Share it
with by posting it on the PIE website and/or sharing it with me to include in
the next monthly newsletter. Looking for other schools to work with, do the
same. Do you have ideas but need some assistance; contact me
(erreadiii@aol.com; reade@mail.mcvts.net).
