PROJECT IDEA EXCHANGE "PIE" MONTHLY NEWSLETTER VOLUME 2: NO. 10 October 2003 http://pie.mcvts.net PROGRAM OF THE MONTH Chiel Huijskes, a Social Studies teacher from The Netherlands, has designed an exciting program to encourage students across the Atlantic Ocean to develop a deeper understanding of their peers. His project will have pupils participate in a comparative study of pupil's attitudes in two countries. Pupils from each school will cooperate on establishing subject matter examining numerous social topics and attitudes such as homework, employment and leisure time. Once established, the students will then conduct surveys within their respective schools on the selected topics and share their finding with their partner school across the Atlantic. Each partner school will then analyze the findings of the other and compare those findings with the attitudes of their own school. During this school year, Chiel's students will be partnered with students from Perth Amboy Tech High School in the United States. This year, Chiel's plan is to work with one school and then post the findings of his project on the MESSAGE FORUM of the PIE website (http://pie.mcvts.net). His goal for the upcoming school year (2004-05) is to again conduct this project, but on a global basis. To learn more about Chiel's project, either access his posting on the MESSAGE FORUM/GENERAL TOPICS or email Chiel at m.huijskes1@chello.nl. PIE "TIP OF THE MONTH" The study of any culture, any civilization or any society often focuses on the buildings and other structures created during that period to serve the needs of the people. If your students or you need information on this topic, may I strongly suggest that you access "The Great Building Collection" at www.greatbuildings.com. This website takes a global approach, supplying numerous examples of architecture around the world, both past and present. The collection contains a very efficient search page that permits the user to access information by "building," "architect" and/or "place." The site contains thousands of photographs of various structures. This is one of those sites, that whether you visit it for business or pleasure, is simply too good to miss! Take a global architecture tour and visit www.greatbuildings.com. DIRECTOR'S NOTES Remember that Project Idea is designed to assist your students and you. If you have an educational program or idea that you would like to share, please post it on the PIE website MESSAGE FORUM or email your program to me so that I can include your activities in a future edition of the PIE NEWSLETTER. New PIE member Henriikka Laiho of Finland is interested in short term web based projects and emails, part of an excellent International English course that is currently in progress. Henriikka can be reached at henriikka.laiho@nakkila.fi. New PIE member Alexander Muratov of Russia has created an international culture project that is very impressive.
