PROGRAM OF THE MONTH

Chiel Huijskes of the A. Roland Holst College in The Netherlands has created and implemented an exciting project which should assist all involved in developing a better understanding of their peers in another country as well as their own. Chiel's students are currently combining their efforts with the students of Mariella Parascandola at Enrico De Nicola Technical High School in Italy. Chiel's project is designed to conduct a comparative study of attitudes of pupils in these two countries. The students in The Netherlands and Italy will agree of selected topics that will serve as a basis for their studies. These students are currently at this stage in their project, establishing communications to prepare for the data collection and sharing segment. As the year progresses, students in both schools will share and analyze data to learn more about the attitudes of teenagers in these countries. Chiel has stated that next year the project will be expanded to include a large number of schools. If you wish to learn more about this project, go to the PIE website http://pie.mcvts.net,  click on MESSAGE FORUM and then GENERAL TOPICS. Chiel has posted a description of the project and if you have questions, you will be able to post them on the website or to directly email Chiel. Also, if you are interested in developing a similar study, you may wish to contact Chiel for some advice and guidance. Best of Luck to both Chiel and Mariella and their students!

PIE "TIP OF THE MONTH"

December 17, 2003 marks the 100th anniversary of the first successful controlled powered flight of a heavier than air "flying machine." This accomplishment, carried out by Orville and Wilbur Wright at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, USA, as well efforts of other pioneers in flight, are documented on an exciting website "FIRST FLIGHT" which can be accessed at www.firstflight.open.ac.uk.   The site is much more than the story of the Wright Brothers. It includes several sections including a "History" segment that outlines the major advances in flight from the Mongolfier Brothers and their hot air balloon flight in 1783 over Paris to Wright Brothers flight in 1903.
The December 2003 edition of the National Geographic Magazine has a large section dedicated to flight. To view this coverage on line, go to http://magma.nationalgeographic.com/ngm/0312  and click on "The Future of Flying." AS well as being exposed to an exciting look at flight, you will be able to build your own 3-D Model of the "Wright Flyer" while receiving an explanation of each major component of this historical aircraft.
So, if you are interested in flight or just would like to learn more about the origins of flight, visit both of these sites.

DIRECTOR'S NOTES

As PROJECT IDEA EXCHANGE enters its fourth year of operation, its mission remains the same: to continuously explore, develop and share programs which encourage communications leading to a better understanding and appreciation of others. But as with any mission, realizing its goal is to a great extent more possible with the cooperation and contributions of others. To help PIE to continue to grow and achieve its mission, I am requesting that you, as a PIE member, please share with me any interesting and effective educational approach that you have in place. The activity does not necessarily need to be part of PIE. All submitted information will be included in a future newsletter and posted (with your permission) on the MESSAGE FORUM of the PIE website http://pie.mcvts.net  have an idea that you would like to share but need some assistance in fully developing and implementing, please contact me (erreadiii@aol.com; reade@mail.mcvts.net). I know that we each are creative and have a program, an approach or idea that when shared, will assist and benefit others. Again, as always, let me take this occasion to thank everyone for his or her membership and persistent interest in PROJECT IDEA EXCHANGE.

Be Well, Happy and Safe!
