PROJECT IDEA EXCHANGE "PIE" MONTHLY NEWSLETTER VOLUME 3: NO. 5 March 2004 http://pie.mcvts.net PROGRAM OF THE MONTH The dream of every student is to be able to travel as part of his or her education. This dream came true for students of PIE member Mubiru Charles from Uganda. During October 2003, a select group of students from the Kikaaya College School traveled to the United Kingdom. The following is a portion of the summary of the travels sent to me by Mibiru. "I am happy to report to you that our exchange programme with the Grove School in Market Drayton, Shropshire, U.K was a success. We left Entebbe Airport at 9:20 am on 5th/October 2003 aboard Kenya Airways. At 16:00 hours we boarded a Gulf Air plane, which took us to Abu Dhabi in United Arab Emirates at exactly 22:45. We took another plane to Bahrain. On the 6th October at 01:10 we took a plane to London (Heathrow)." "We were warmly received at Heathrow Airport in London by a gentleman from Grove School. We were picked in a coach; we had a stop over on the way because Grove School is located 200 miles from London. Drinks and snacks were served to everybody and at this time the group was experiencing the English winter. We reached the Grove School at 2:00 pm. Mr. Stewart Harrison, in charge of international relations together with several staff and students warmly welcomed us. In the first week we were accommodated in the scouts centre, and in the second week students were allocated host families in pairs." "We staged music, and dance workshops/concerts in England. In the morning we started with a music, and dance workshop. Our students taught their counterparts how to sing, dance and also how to use some African traditional equipment. The traditional dances we performed were picked from several tribes across Uganda such as Bakisimba, Nankasa, Muwoggola, Mbaga Dances from Buganda region, Lunyege, Ntogolo from Western Uganda, Bwola from the North, Imbalu from Eastern Uganda etc. We also presented several traditional folk songs, Christian praise and worship songs in Churches." "On 19th October, 2003 at 8:00 p.m. local time we boarded Kenya Airways plane at London Heathrow, and we reached Nairobi Jommo Kenyatta Airport at 6:30 am local time. In the afternoon at 1:20 p.m we left for Entebbe International Airport and we reached at 2:10 p.m." To fully understand the excitement and depth of their travels and to receive a detailed dsecrition of the many activities and benefits of their travels, I suggest that you contact Head Teacher Murbiru Charles at kikaayacollegeschool@epals.com or you can contact me (reade@mail.mcvts.net). On behalf of all PIE members, congratulations to Head Teacher Murbiru Charles, his students at Kikaaya College School and to everyone involved in this adventure of a lifetime. MEMBER NEWS Project Idea Exchange is proud to welcome the following new member to its steady growing worldwide membership. Thomas Lechner, Teacher Nagoya International High School Nagoya, Japan PIE members can now be found in thirty-one countries on six continents. Please share PIE with others and encourage them to join. PIE "TIP OF THE MONTH" On Wednesday, July 25th, 1956 tragedy stuck in the Atlantic Ocean off the northeast coast of the United States as the ocean liners "T/N Andrea Doria" and the "MV Stockholm" collided. One of the survivors has created a website, "Andrea Doria-Tragedy and Rescue at Sea" (http://andreadoria.org) to remember that faithful event in the North Atlantic. It provides an in-depth examination of all involved including numerous visual displays. This site will provide the student, teacher and anyone interested in travel by sea with a detailed view of a tragedy that hopefully will never be repeated. DIRECTOR'S NOTES I need your help! I am currently exploring the possibility of establishing a video conferencing segment for Project Idea Exchange. Video conferencing was one of my primary goals when I visited Japan in 2000 to establish PIE. But my knowledge and experience in such an undertaking is limited. Therefore I am asking for your assistance. If you have any knowledge (technological, educational, or such) or if you have any experience in educational video conferencing, I would truly appreciate hearing from you. If you are interested in learning more about video conferencing possibilities, please contact me so that I can share all information and ideas with PIE members. Also, if you have any ideas for programs or just need some assistance please contact me (erreadiii@aol.com; reade@mail.mcvts.net). I am always available to assist you in whatever manner possible! One other note of interest; if you have been contacting me using "EPALS.COM" please note the following change in my email address. I can now be reached at Until Next Month, Be Well, Happy and Safe!
